New asphalt nay seem quite dense and indestructible but actually it's rather porous an it beings to deteriorate very quickly.
The sun oxidizes asphalt pavement hardening the binder that holds the asphalt together. The asphalt will get dry and brittle and begin to crack.
Water enters the cracks and starts to erode the sand and gravel base. In the winter the expansion and contraction of the water during the freeze thaw cycles enlarges the cracks.
Once the base and the sub-base have been eroded by the water, the asphalt will collapse and the separate under heavy loads.
POTHOLES are the result!!!
